I’m not trying to do anything that requires firmware password (like recovery), I’m just trying to login like I always used to. Is there a way to go back to how it was before, with the normal login screen (with my known password)? I tried following these steps:, but I always get the lockscreen. And now I can’t get it to boot normally, without recovery mode. I think the issue could be that my Macbook is trying to boot into recovery mode (because I accidentally clicked to recover my password), but recovery mode requires the firmware password. I tried booting into recovery mode with command+r, but I still get the same screen. I also tried any other password I could think of. I tried my regular login password, which didn’t work. I don’t remember ever setting a firmware password. My Macbook then rebooted and took me to a black screen with a grey lock and a password prompt (which I learned was the firmware password page). I do remember my password, so that’s not the issue. This is posted from the same late 2015 27" iMac in question.Īccidentally activated firmware lockscreen, how do I go back? I logged out of my Macbook (pro 2019, Catalina) then after mistyping my password, accidentally hit the “recover password” button (or something along those lines, can’t remember). I do not have any other personal Apple devices. Through the options given in Terminal under sudo firmwarepasswd, I can generate a 'firmware password recovery key' using -unlockseed, but searching online it appears only Apple can use this code (at a price I can't afford) to then have my physically bring the device in to unlock.Ĭan anyone help? I've tried everything and it's the strangest thing. It shows a Firmware password is set and the mode is "command". I Googled and found the terminal command to check the status of my Firmware Password. I can reboot into Big Sur, but that is it - all other startup keyboard commands bring me to a lock screen. I tried every possible password I could think of, but could not get passed this screen. This is strange because I have never ever set a Firmware Password nor have I heard of one since I've had this iMac (bought brand new in 2015). This brought me to black screen with a lock asking for my Firmware password. With my USB copy of Mojave and my recent Time Machine backup plugged in, I rebooted my iMac and held Command+R on my keyboard. The upgrade appeared to go smoothly, but some of the compatibility issues I feared became a larger problem than expected. Anticipating some potential issues, I made a time machine backup of all of my files beforehand and made a bootable USB disc with Mojave on it to make the process of reverting easy. I updated my iMac to Big Sur (from Mojave) on Friday.
